A man was hospitalized Sunday after he was shot by at least one San Antonio police officer on the West Side, Chief Jesse Salame said during a news conference.

The 31-year-old man’s identity was not given during the news conference, but Salame said he has an active drug warrant.

Undercover SAPD officers drove around town to follow the man to a hotel and gas station to verify it’s the suspect the officers were looking for.

Salame said at some point the man realized he was being followed and waved his gun out the vehicle’s window while he was driving.

Officers told Salame the man fired his weapon at them during the vehicle pursuit. The police chief said SAPD returned fire.

“There were a couple other vehicles caught in the crossfire,” Salame said. “There were no bystanders, thankfully, that were injured.”

It’s unclear exactly where police and the man exchanged gunfire, but the pursuit lead to a parking lot near Horal Drive and Marbach Road.

The man turned his vehicle around and hit another vehicle in the process. The pursuit ended when the man crashed into a tree and fled away from officers on foot, Salame said.

The man recovered in a nearby parking lot with gunshot wounds, Salame said. He was hospitalized in critical condition.

Salame said at least four police officers were involved, but it is unclear how many shot at the man.

One passenger was taken into custody, and another got away while SAPD chased the man down. Additionally, officers found a handgun inside the crashed vehicle.
