WESTFIELD, Ind. — A family-owned café is bringing specialty coffee and seasonal drinks to Westfield, inspired by the coffee culture its owners experienced in Seattle.

Velvet Roast was opened by Merna and Marven Nashed after they moved to Westfield. Merna said they wanted to create a locally owned café with a drive-through.

“Coming from Seattle, which is where we originally moved from, the coffee scene there is huge,” she said. “We wanted to bring a taste of that to Westfield.”

Opening the café came during a busy time for the family. The couple built the business while adjusting to a move and welcoming their third child.

“It’s been challenging, but it’s also been wonderful in all the possible ways,” Merna said.

The owners say they want customers to feel welcome and recognized. Their approach, Merna said, starts with kindness and aims to bring back the neighborhood feel of a coffee shop where baristas know their regulars.

Velvet Roast serves seasonal drinks, including a brown-butter snickerdoodle latte topped with cookie pieces and a maple-pecan drink finished with candied pecans or a maple cookie. Holiday flavors include a Christmas sugar cookie drink and a peppermint mocha. Drinks are available hot or iced.

“Everybody who walks in here is special,” Merna said. “You want to walk away feeling like you’re known.”
